Aztec Staff

This is the work in progress of the weapon for my Aztec character. Pretty much done with the high-res. Using a lot of things I learned from modeling the character, so sculpting this weapon took me no time at all.

Pretty much almost done with the high-res sculpt. The hair is getting re-done through hair planes for use in-engine in UDK. Working on his weapon to take a rest before giving this a few last touches.

Finished Ball Contraption

Completed Ball Contraption. Worked on some cool fire and ice particle systems and shaders to finish it off along with tweaking a few mechanics. Was very fun to work on. The particles follow the ball to compliment the complex shader i built. Since performance in the game affects the physics i still had to be smart and keep them low in number of instructions when working on the shaders in order to keep performance up.

Also added some impulse actors on the ice tornado contraption in order to consistently move them to the center.

Progress on the high-res sculpt

I am currently enjoying my detailing method, it's fairly modular, so I make one good detail piece and I am able to re-use it across the model. The headdress I am probably going to to give separate feathers instead of just making it a flat sculpt. Moving on the be belt, further refining that helmet, wristbands and finaly, giving the body another pass with more detail.

UDK Physics and Programming test. This is all work in progress. Music by killertracks. I created that quick ice shader. Particle effects by Epic Games.
Got really frustrating at one point, but I am solving a lot of the issues.

Working on getting some detail in there. Going in for getting those shoulders down, they look to be pretty critical since they play a big role in the silhouette of the character. For now this is my head area detail.

Blocking out space for my game design class. It's a challenge to get everything balanced while making sure everything looks grounded to real life. The map was based on the back alley of the "Colombia" restaurant in st.Armand's Circle in Sarasota. Further edited to achieve a successful multiplayer level.

Character blackout. Detail is in there just as a test. Some of the block-out is even a block-out for the actual block-out. So far this has allowed me to get a really good feel for the character.

Quick Concept

Went to Dipsy today, but my laptop ran out of charge. I sketched this "elephant environment thing?" up in about 15-20 minutes. I think it has a lot of potential if i were to go back in and finish it. In retrospect, I think I've come a long way in digital painting, I've managed to pretty much understand all the steps to make my way to a decent painting.

These have been my findings: ALWAYS start off very loose, even scribble in abstract form at first to get a feel for the painting, then work composition, loosely throw in some light and value, move things around, flatten image, work your foreground, midground, background, go in with a color overlay getting reference from a good color palette, run out of ideas?: scribble or throw down a texture to paint over. Then once you get the main composition down, then maybe start rendering.

Here is my base model so far for my Aztec king. Pretty happy with base proportions, might move on to smaller detail once I am done tinkering with it some more. The hair is placeholder at the moment.

2D Character Turnaround - Montezuma III

So I will be modeling an Aztec king this semester. The basic story is that Montezuma III takes over after Cuitalahuac after Cuitalahuac dies from a brain injury. In this alternate time, the Spanish go south of Mexico, thus bringing peace to the Aztec civilization and a golden age commences upon the rise of Montezuma III.

Winter Project - a few more hours in

Added a tree and some foliage. Tree was done incredibly fast. I went the zsphere -> dynamesh -> decimate route. I am now working on the inside of the temple, and hopefully I will have this somewhat near finished before school starts.

So i guess i didn't get to work on this project as much as I wanted to (i'd say i've only spent a good 5 days), but here is a sneak peak of the temple I am working on. This is a small section of a much bigger temple, inspired from those in Cambodia. Everything is pretty much constructed out of one wall, one trim and one prop, some re-textured or broken up to be re-used as much as possible.

Getting way faster at sculpting, the Sphynx took me pretty much one week from scratch to hi-res to rendered out with materials in UDK (although I did re-use my statue's head model). Also added some parameters in the material to the statue so that anyone set dressing can customize it.

What I have so far for my card illustrations. These are technically speed paintings that are receiving second passes of polish since I have to do so many of these in such a short amount of time. These are going to be 2.5" x 3.5" so i don't have to worry too much about the little details unlike in my bigger paintings. More to come.

For my last prop, I am making an advertisement kit. Having lots of fun with the material and particle editor. That "matrix" font material was particularly interesting to create and served as a template for my wire-frame material.

Futuristic Pyramid [WIP]

Here is the futuristic pyramid I've been working on. A large part of the textures are placeholder (as well as some of the geometry), but this is pretty much what I am going for. Heavily inspired by the architecture in Dubai. I really wanted to have those smooth curves while maintaining a low triangle count which we are required to go by. Something that really is helping out is to add a few contrasting flat surfaces, which was suggested to me by fellow classmate and friend Eli Allen.

Pyramid Kit - Progress [WIP]

Early stages of development for the kit. The idea is to have three pyramids for the kit. One regular pyramid, one rougher looking pyramid (ala bent pyramid in egypt), and a more complex futuristic pyramid.

The only pyramid that is complete right now is the regular pyramid. The rougher pyramid is receiving the beat up look through multiply layers in the material editor on both normal and diffuse maps. The Futuristic pyramid is only a 3d concept at the moment.

Another thing I am addressing with this is a lot of re-usability. The "beat-up" layer of the rough pyramid can be re-used in the level in the ground to break it up. The regular pyramid uses a tillable texture that can be re-used anywhere else in the level (but the tiling in the pyramid is masked with detail normal maps multiplied into the normal and diffuse in the editor).

Egyptian Statue Progress [WIP] pt.3

Another day on my final stages of the statue. Seems like an endless wave of things that I want to fix, like the left arm's bicept right now, seems kind of big. Today I combined some objects to occupy the same UV space/ optimized UV space. Fixed the normal map and gave it some more detail. Also, gave the mantle the same texture as the skirt. Got the eyes glowing a bit and went in and finalized the sculpt texture and gave the statue some occlusion mapping.

Work has now begun on the pyramid (concepting for now)

Egyptian Statue Progress [WIP] pt.2

I finally had time to pick this baby back up to finish up after putting this to the side to work on my modular kit. Here's some progress on it. Fixed some more proportion issues, including the big right arm and leg length and lowered his "skirt" a bit.
When importing the statue to UDK I played around with the material editor and found that I also liked a tan version of my statue, so there's a possibility i might make multiple versions of this according to my team.
So far I have to model this, a pyramid, and a futuristic Egyptian vehicle, which should be interesting.

Egyptian Statue Progress [WIP]

This is all WIP of course. I am done UV'ing the statue and I am now on the texturing stage of this project.

Once I was happy with my body sculpt I went ahead and did some concept art on how i should proceed, which helped a lot... having concept art for your piece speeds up your work tenfold. The statue on the right is a concept paint-over of the high-res sculpt. The statue on the left is how it's looking so far in zbrush.

Lots of work to juggle right now so i am having less and less time to spend on this.

Ryan Woodward - Sketch demo at the beach

Ryan Woodward came to give a life drawing demo today at the beach. Very interesting demo. Concentrated on generalzing the figure down to one shape to start off and then throw down some big lines that shows the figure's movement. He further expanded it into incorporating cartoon elements into life drawing and exaggerating. So here's some sketches from today:

Painted some thumbnails on photoshop from The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
I went through the entire movie pausing and analyzing as much as i could. These thumbnails helped me understand a lot about lighting, composition, mood, color, and when put together; the progression of the movie.

Killnmouth Dragon

Another illustration inspired by the magic the gathering description of Killnmouth Dragon.

Important to note is that I don't look at the official Wizards of the coast card before starting my illustration. I try and pick cards I don't know the image of already so that I am not "pre-influenced" by the original design.

So here's Killnmouth Dragon's description:

Color: Red Creature
Action: This is not your typical D&D dragon. Show a dragon (of the artist's imagination) on a rocky perch. He has fired a blast of hot sand at a couple of fleeing goblins. The superheated sand coats the goblins and when it cools off it turns into glass. So you end up with dead goblins covered in glass.

Show this symbolically: we see a huge curling wave, and we see a figure calmly walking on the water of the wave, away from us, as though the ripcurl is a tunnel. We even see the figure's footsteps lingering in the time-frozen surface of the water.

Ok, so am finally starting my blog. I am an incoming Sophomore for Game Art & Design at Ringling College of art and Design. I need to progress on my artwork and I find this to be a great way to accomplish that.

Instead of dumping YEARS worth of work into my blog as my first post I'll dump a few from spring semester of Ringling as well and that's it. From then on it's all new work from the summer. So I'll separate Spring and Summer into two separate posts, for a total of three posts today...
